Dental Hygiene
Regular hygiene appointments are important to prevent the development of gum disease. Gum disease, also know as periodontal disease, results in bone loss causing the teeth to loosen and eventually fall out.
Most patients require a scale and polish once or twice a year in order to remove hardened calculus and bacteria from the gum line. Patients who have gum disease will require more intensive cleanings 3-4 times a year. Each patient will be given personalised oral hygiene instruction.
Root Canals
Root canal treatment is required when the nerve in the tooth becomes irreversibly damaged. This painful process can happen through trauma or when decay is left for too long in the tooth and reaches the nerve, causing it to become inflamed and eventually die.
The aim of a root canal treatment is to remove the inflamed nerve, and then clean and disinfect the canal. This will stop the pain and allow you to retain the tooth. Most teeth will require a crown after a root canal treatment.
Crowns
Crowns are normally placed to restore a tooth that is weak due to decay or the presence of large fillings. Crowns act like the rings around a barrel and help to prevent weakened tooth fracture. Crowns and veneers can also be used to improve aesthetics.
The procedure for a crown involves some filing of the outside of the tooth to make space for porcelain or metal. A temporary crown or veneer is then placed on the tooth. You will then return a few weeks later for the final crown or veneer to be fitted.
Bridgework
Bridge work is used to replace missing teeth. For patients missing only one tooth, the minimally invasive resin bonded bridge can be used. This is good choice as no tooth structure is removed.
For more than one tooth missing, a conventional bridge can be used. This procedure is similar to a crown appointment only the lab attaches a natural looking fake tooth to a crown to fill the missing tooth space.
Dental Implants
Dental implants are the gold standard for replacing a missing tooth. The dental implant is the closest replacement option to your own natural tooth. An implant screw is placed in the bone and allowed to integrate into the jaw bone.
Once the implant is fused to the bone, a crown can then be placed on the implant to restore the missing tooth. Dental implants can be used for single or multiple missing teeth and can also be attached to dentures to give better retention.
Dentures
Dentures are another treatment option available to replace multiple missing teeth. There are different types of denture material that can be used to give you the best fitting denture depending on how many teeth need replacing. Usually, the making of a denture takes 4-5 appointments. Dentures can be attached to dental implants to give a better retained denture.
Teeth Whitening
Teeth whitening is a great way to improve the appearance of your teeth without damaging the tooth structure. Impressions of your teeth are taken, and the lab makes bleaching trays for your upper and lower teeth. Bleaching syringes are used to fill the trays and you wear these at night for 5-7 days to improve to brightness of your teeth.
Cosmetic Dentistry
Cosmetic dentistry is a branch of dentistry that deals with improving the appearance of a smile. Advancements in dental materials give more minimally invasive aesthetic options to patients. Composite bondings are a great way to improve the aesthetics of teeth, as it does not damage tooth structure. However, bondings need maintenance and can stain over time. Other more permanent aesthetic options like porcelain veneers are available to patients and can be discussed in detail during a consultation.
